How to Avoid Common Safety Issues When Designing Wooden Toys for Children

A wooden toy may look simple, but designing a safe toy for children requires careful attention to materials, structure, components, and the intended age group.

For toy brands and product developers, identifying potential safety risks early can help avoid testing failures, costly redesigns, and production delays.

Here are some of the most common safety issues to consider when developing wooden toys.

1. Small Parts and Choking Hazards

Small detachable components are one of the first things to consider, especially for toys intended for younger children.

Common risk areas include:

  • Small wooden pieces
  • Beads and buttons
  • Wheels and axles
  • Decorative parts
  • Plastic components
  • Magnetic pieces

Design tip: Avoid unnecessary detachable decorative parts, and make sure important components are securely retained.

During mechanical testing, components may become detached and then need to be assessed for small-part hazards. In Europe, EN 71-1 includes requirements for small parts and mechanical safety.

2. Sharp Edges, Points, and Splinters

Wooden toys should have smooth surfaces and appropriately designed edges, but simply sanding the surface is not always enough.

Potential risks can come from:

  • Sharp corners
  • Thin wooden edges
  • Cut-outs and holes
  • Rough surfaces
  • Cracks or splinters
  • Edges created after a component breaks

Design tip: Consider edge radius, wood selection, machining, and sanding during the design stage—not only during final inspection.

Sharp edges and points are specifically addressed in toy safety testing, including testing after foreseeable mechanical stress.

3. Weak Connections and Detachable Components

A toy may look perfectly assembled but still fail after repeated pulling, twisting, dropping, or impact.

Common connection methods include:

  • Wooden dowels
  • Screws
  • Adhesives
  • Plastic connectors
  • Metal axles
  • Press-fit components

Design tip: When reviewing a prototype, ask: “What happens if a child pulls, twists, drops, or throws this part?” If a component becomes loose, could it create another safety hazard?

4. Magnets Require Extra Attention

Magnets are increasingly used in wooden puzzles, matching games, construction toys, and other educational products.

The main concern is whether a magnet can become accessible or detached during use.

Small, strong magnets can pose serious risks if swallowed. Therefore, the magnet should be securely enclosed and retained throughout foreseeable use and testing.

Design tip: Do not rely only on adhesive when designing a high-risk magnetic component. Consider a robust mechanical enclosure or other secure retention method.

5. Wood, Paint, and Surface Finishing

Choosing the right wood is important for both product quality and safety.

Different wood species have different characteristics in terms of hardness, grain, density, stability, and machining performance.

Poor material selection or processing may result in:

  • Cracks
  • Splinters
  • Rough surfaces
  • Warping
  • Broken edges

Design tip: Choose materials based on more than appearance and cost. Consider the target age, product structure, processing method, and testing requirements.

Paints, coatings, adhesives, and other materials also need to be suitable for the intended market and tested according to applicable requirements. For EU toys, safety requirements cover both mechanical and physical hazards and chemical hazards.

6. Age Grading Should Start With the Design

Age grading should not be treated as something decided after the product has been completed.

The intended age group can affect the entire product design, including:

  • Component size
  • Accessibility
  • Structural strength
  • Magnets
  • Cords and loops
  • Materials and coatings
  • Warnings and instructions

Design tip: Define the following before finalizing the prototype: Target Age → Intended Use → Potential Hazards → Applicable Tests.

A Simple Safety Check Before Mass Production

  • Is the target age clearly defined?
  • Are there any unnecessary small detachable parts?
  • Could any component become loose during use?
  • Are all edges and corners appropriately designed?
  • Could the wood crack or produce splinters?
  • Are moving parts free from dangerous pinch points?
  • Are magnets securely retained?
  • Are paints, coatings, and adhesives suitable for the target market?
  • Has the prototype been evaluated against the applicable safety requirements?

Safety Starts at the Design Stage

Toy safety should not begin when the product arrives at the testing laboratory. It should begin with the first sketch.

By considering age grading, material selection, component retention, mechanical strength, surface finishing, and testing requirements during product development, brands can reduce the risk of unexpected failures and costly redesigns.

For wooden toy brands and buyers, working with an experienced manufacturing partner can make this process much easier—from prototype development and material selection to testing and mass production.

A safe wooden toy is not just tested safe. It is designed safe from the beginning.
