When you want to get into the wood toy field and want to know the history of some familiar brands, this article may provide some help.

As you know, most of the old wooden toy brands come from Europe, so that’s one of the reasons why I wrote to consolidate this article first. I will do this work according to the country. You can find some famous big brands and and dedicated small brands. Next I will collect brands from other markets, such as North America, etc.

Some of them have a long history, and some of them have been hot in recent years. Each has its own characteristics, and each brand always has something to amaze you. Let’s get started

1. LIDL – Founded in1932 from Germany

Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG is a German international discount retailer chain that operates over 11,000 stores across Europe and the United States. Headquartered in Neckarsulm, Baden-Württemberg, the company belongs to the Schwarz Group, which also operates the hypermarket chain Kaufland.

Lidl is the chief competitor of the similar German discount chain Aldi in several markets. 2. ALDI – Founded in1946 from Germany

3.Djeco – Founded in 1954 from France

In the Djeco family, honour goes to the mother, Véronique Michel-Dalès. She created her small company in 1954, a time when few women embarked on adventures of this kind. She devised educational games such as Le loto des quatre jeudis and Ma maison des puces. Djeco’s games are attractive, intelligent and fun at the same time. They have been hugely successful and won four Oscars for toys in the 1960s. The company name is a reference to the gecko, the lucky lizard.

Vilac began in 1911 in the village of Moirans-en-Montagne, the French toy capital, when Narcisse Villet created a small craft workshop called “Maison Villet”.

In 1951, the Villet sons took over the small workshop, the notoriety of which was well established, and created the Villet Frères establishment. In 1979 Villet Frères became Vilac which is the contraction of the words Villet and lacquer which honors the trademark colors and finish of their toys. The year 1985 marks the end of the Villet family ownership, when Vilac is purchased by Hervé Halgand, who has been deeply committed to Vilac’s tradition of turned and lacquered wooden toys. Halgand successfully developed toys with appeal for new generations while preserving its culture and traditions. In 2012, Vilac was acquired by the France Cartes group, who have successfully maintained the distinctive trademarks of the brand, as well as their EPV label.
